Visiting the CAHS

Walking through the Capital Area Humane Society is a heartwarming experience. The atmosphere is bright, open and optimistic. You'll see a smile on the face of a child petting a kitten, joy as newlyweds adopt their first dog and pride as an owner teaches her dog how to "shake" for the first time in obedience class.

Welcome to CAHS

Summer Influx

Our greatest challenge at the CAHS occurs every spring and summer, when the shelter prepares for a daily influx of hundreds of kittens and cats. The result of uncontrolled breeding and pet overpopulation, "kitten season" peaks in the summer months and tapers off in the fall. The number of puppies and dogs surrendered to us also increases during this period, but to a lesser degree than kittens and cats, due to years of successful canine spaying and neutering.

By the Numbers

In an effort to better quantify the work we do, the Capital Area Humane Society has recently embraced the Asilomar Accords. The Accords are a series of "best practices" agreed upon by animal welfare agencies across the country. Click here to learn more about the Asilomar Accords, what it means for us, plus view a report of our animal welfare statistics here.
